CHAPTER FOURTEEN
I needed to do something. Well, something other than cleaning up. We had three bodies and a few dozen unconscious classmates on the floor. And we had four people blocking the investigation.
All I had was a remote, three bodies, and two weapons. What I didn't have was a motive. I still thought it had something to do with Marla's speech. It felt like that was important. One of my theories was that all this had been done to shut Marla up before she exposed a secret that was worth killing her for.
What were those secrets? I had found Marla's in her purse. Firing because of embezzlement would've probably ended her career for life. Is that what someone with a big secret does? Out other people's secrets?
My only secret wasn't really a secret anymoreâthat was my involvement in the CIA. Kelly didn't have any deep dark secrets, or I would know. The idea of blackmailing the girls was ridiculous since no one but me knew they were coming. As for Kevin? He displays all of his bad behavior unashamedly. There'd be nothing else to tell unless he was moonlighting as a double agent or porn star. I threw up in my mouth a little at that last idea.
I thought about the others. What were they hiding? And was it enough to knock off Marla? Just Marla. It seemed like Barry, Amanda, and Kelly had little to do with her.
Which brought back the idea of a spree killer. I didn't know much about them, and I didn't want to ask Betty just yet. But from what I understood, a spree killer kills as many people as possible in a short period of time. Which would mean that Marla's secrets had nothing to do with her murder.
Then again, maybe after killing Marla to shut her up, the killer kind of liked it and decided to knock off the others.
That's all I hadâkilling to keep Marla quiet and spree killer. It sounded crazy. On the plus side, it was only two motives that could even be blended, which seemed like a bit of a win.
Okay, if Marla had blackmail material on so many of my classmates, she'd have to have notes, right? As a former spy, I'd trained myself to memorize a lot, from a complete cover story, a new address and name every few weeks, or where to avoid the Komodo dragon when navigating the Yakuza boss's secret hideaway.
But the idea that Marla was able to memorize a list of grievances and juicy material was a bit far-fetched. Like most people, she had to have a written speech. I hadn't found anything like that in her purse. If I were Marla, I would've hidden it someplace not so obvious.
Which left two placesâthe dressing room beneath the stage and the locker room. I thought about this. I didn't remember Marla being a jock in school. But she did have a tendency for the theatrical and her purse was there, so I needed to get down to the green room for another once-over.
